Most of Harpeggios' pieces are arranged from songs with prominent solos, and thus it is crucial that the best candidate for each be chosen so that the song to reach its full potential.
To achieve this,
solo auditions are held for every new song inducted into the group's
repertoire, as well as whenever a soloist graduates. All who are
interested stand in front of the group and sing one part of the song (chosen
by that Semester's musical director). Afterward, a paper vote is
taken, and the winning three sing another predetermined piece of the song
"callbacks" and then exit the room. The rest of the group deliberates
in what sometimes becomes heated discourse, tone and style often being the
chief considerations. Eventually,
however, a girl is chosen and all are allowed to reenter.
